This January it will be two years ago that I decided to start my own (small) business. I have always been crafty and artsy, but never thought people would actually pay me to design and make things for them. I had a friend at school ask me to make a rehearsal dinner sign for her sister-in-law's wedding, and she suggested I start charging people for similar services. I started out creating an Instagram and Facebook page, and then slowly added an Etsy shop as well (linked at the bottom of this post).
When I first started out, I really had no direction and just started creating. Over the past 2 years, I have learned a lot and focused my business into more specific products. I do customized artwork for weddings, home decor, showers, etc. I like that I get to help customers make their vision come to life or create something they have seen somewhere else but for less. One of my biggest things I focus on is keeping my prices affordable while still maintaining a steady profit. Believe me, I would not be able to quit my teaching job and live off my profit, but it is nice to have some extra money for "fun" spending. It's also nice to have a creative outlet where I can kind of zone out and just work while not thinking about anything else. It's almost therapeutic for me. In the last year, I have been doing mostly wedding decor and gifts, but I like to say that I can try and create anything the customer desires.
